Fire protection: More safety for passengers and train staff

Fire protection: More safety for passengers and train staff

Fire safety-compliant parts ensuring maximum safety   The Austrian BATEGU Gummitechnologie GmbH is exhibiting at this year's InnoTrans in Berlin (20-23 Sept) the world's most comprehensive range of (highly) dynamically resilient anti-vibration components for bogies in railway vehicles, all of which meet the latest European fire protection requirements of EN 45545.

09.09.2016

The Viennese company is a pioneer in the field of flame retardant (highly) dynamically resilient elastomer materials. Already in 2011, BATEGU was the first manufacturer to present elastomer materials for EN 45545-compliant anti-vibration components, specifically for use in bogies.
"The challenge then was to develop materials that comply with the new European fire safety standard EN 45545 and this without any restriction as regards the technical requirements, the comfort or service life", explains Frank Schmitt, Managing Partner of the company. BATEGU managed to do this fully with BTG®9713 and BTG®9559. This is proven with the certificates of governmental testing institutes as well as long-term successful practical use such as with the Wiener Linien (Vienna’s public transport operator).

Worldwide leader
Today, BATEGU has the world's largest range of EN 45545-compliant elastomer materials (40 to 85 shore A +/-5, R9 with a hazard level of 2 or 3). With this variety of materials, any anti-vibration component (rubber/metal component) for a railway vehicle can be produced both for OEM and as a spare part. BATEGU offers all types of such components with the exception of the air-spring, which has been announced for 2017.
BATEGU offers all interested parties at the InnoTrans a comprehensive overview of the wide application possibilities of EN 45545-compliant elastomer materials and examples of implemented components, whether as hinge cover, as hollow spring, or as a primary or secondary spring (such as layer springs, axle springs or conical springs).

Officially certified functionality in fire protection quality
Single and multi-axial life expectancy testing by an external testing institute confirms that BATEGU's EN 45545-compliant materials have excellent setting behaviour, as well as excellent damping characteristics, even with highly dynamic loads. In addition to the fire protection quality these components have demonstrated to fulfil all functional requirements.

No new tools required
BTG®9713 and BTG®9559 can also be easily processed with existing vulcanisation tools to form anti-vibration components in the usual dimensions for existing spaces. This means that OEM's save on elaborate changes to proven technical solutions and vehicle operators can easily retrofit existing vehicles to make them EN 45545-compliant so their passengers are adequately protected.

Environmentally friendly material
BTG®9713 and BTG®9559 are halogen-free, free of nitrosamine-forming raw materials and comply with strict RoHS guidelines, as well as the REACH requirements and the guidelines of UNIFE.

Exceptions to the fire protection (4.7) not allowed
With the recent announcement by a further component manufacturer introducing an air-spring bellow for railway vehicle applications at this year's InnoTrans that complies with the requirements of EN 45545 hazard level 3, fortunately in the future all anti-vibration components for bogies in EN 45545-compliant version will be available. EN 45545-compliant bogies definitely are a prerequisite for the official vehicle registration. Pleasing for all passengers: Travelling by train is more secure.
