BATEGU flame-retardant EPDM rubber profiles comply with EN 45545

Following the successful introduction of a material and process for producing EN 45545-compliant vibration elements, the Austrian technology company BATEGU is now launching a newly developed material for the production of EN 45545-compliant rubber profiles at InnoTrans in Berlin, the largest international trade fair for transport technology. This is a further step towards greater safety for passengers.

23.09.2014

EN 45545, the new European standard for fire protection on railway vehicles, affects virtually all materials and components used in railway vehicles, including all rubber and rubber-metal components. Rubber profiles for windows and doors – usually made of EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene rubber) – are the best known examples of this.

Conventional rubber profiles can no longer keep pace with tougher fire safety requirements. Simply increasing the flame retardants used to date does not present a solution, as this adversely affects the mechanical properties of the seal. Furthermore, flame-retardant rubber mixtures have been completed reassessed in terms of their risks as chemical products to protect health and the environment and, at the same time, the use of halogenated elastomer mixtures is restricted due to European directives.

BATEGU flame-retardant rubber profiles

BATEGU has now succeeded in developing a flame-retardant EPDM material that meets the mechanical properties previously expected from profiles AND also meets, indeed falls below, the limits (R22 and R23, Hazard Level 3) required by EN 45545. In the event of a fire, this significantly reduces life-threatening and other seriously negative effects to the health of humans.

The combination of mechanical and fire protection requirements was only one aspect of this development project: the environmental impact of the material was equally important. The new BATEGU material (BTG®9713-P) is halogen-free, free from nitrosamine-forming raw materials and fully conforms to RoHS directives, REACH requirements, UNIFE (Railway Industry Substance List) guidelines and rail vehicle manufacturers' internal environmental protection guidelines.

BATEGU and M+R Dichtungstechnik cooperate on fire safety

BATEGU continues to expand its product range with the development of this material and supply of flame-retardant profiles. The EN 45545-compliant profiles are produced in cooperation with M+R Dichtungstechnik GmbH, based in Seligenstadt near Frankfurt, a company specialising in the production of extruded profiles. This collaboration brings together the strengths of both companies and ideally makes use of the potential for growth.

BATEGU will be showcasing its comprehensive product portfolio and technical solutions for the rail industry at InnoTrans 2014 from 23rd to 26th September 2014, on Stand 20 in Hall 21.

M+R - Manufacturer of high-quality rubber profiles

M+R Dichtungstechnik GmbH, based in Seligenstadt near Frankfurt, was founded in 1995 and specialises in the manufacture of high-quality extruded synthetic rubber sealing profiles. Thanks to its many years of experience, the company develops solutions to overcome all the challenges encountered in rubber extrusion. The company processes different materials, such as EPDM, SBR, NBR and CR/NBR mixtures, within a hardness range of from 50 to 95 Shore. Its core expertise includes the extrusion of profiles with large cross-sections and weights per metre, geometries that are difficult to produce and co-extrusion (the combination of rigid - soft and/or different colours in one profile). The name M+R is synonymous with quality, flexibility, reliability and on-schedule delivery. Regular communication and constant transparency in the production process form the basis for trusting customer relationships and the successful growth of the business.
